SOME of you may be aware that since the start of this year I have been writing a series of articles on the benefits of complementary therapy for a regional magazine called Active.

Planning the latest article for their October issue reminded me of the therapeutic benefits of touch, as well as the importance of treating physical problems.

There are many examples from the skin-to-skin contact that bonds mother and baby, the giving and receiving of a hug if a friend is feeling low and even a firm handshake which goes a long way in business, rather than the limp ‘wet fish’ that makes us all cringe!

Our role as complementary therapists gives us a privileged position, from that critical initial consultation which can often be cathartic for the client, right through to the hands-on treatment.

In my own practice, treating clients with reflexology or Bowen therapy, I use my intuition to guide my hands as I make the appropriate moves, focusing not only on the physical, but also to enhance their spiritual and mental wellbeing. I have many examples where boosting a client’s mood and morale in this way has dramatically helped their recovery. I take the same approach when teaching students.
