AS a complementary therapist I am well used to washing my hands. While we should all be doing this anyway to protect ourselves from germs, from food poisoning to flu, sometimes people make do with running their hands under a cold tap.
The outbreak of coronavirus has made us all more aware of the importance of washing hands thoroughly with soap, for around 20 seconds, the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice! However, we know that is not always practical so keeping a hand sanitizer on your desk or in your bag is the next best thing.
With news that retail stocks of sanitizer are running low, we can perhaps make our own more natural alternative. Below are two recipes based on the essential oils of Tea Tree and Lavender, renowned for their natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties. As a bonus, together they smell great which makes them an ideal combo!

In a small lidded glass jar or bottle mix 10 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil, 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and quarter teaspoon of Vitamin E (natural preservative). Add and mix in one tablespoon of witch hazel and 8ozs pure aloe vera gel. Shake well before each use.
…and to Good Housekeeping
You will need a small clean 2oz glass bottle, plain vodka (any brand will do), Essential Oils of Tea Tree and Lavender and pure aloe vera gel (from any health food store). Pour vodka to a generous 25 per cent full. Add 10-15 drops of each oil. Fill the bottle with aloe vera gel and shake well. Shake before each use.
My Top Tip: Save money with a combo Tea Tree Oil with Lavender, available from Bowen Boutique.
The NHS advises hand washing with soap and water is best for fighting germs, but these DIY options are handy when you’re out and about.
Happy mixing… Helen x
